Jewish Federation’s Ulpan instructors are ready to help improve your Hebrew language skills, including conversation, comprehension, grammar, reading, and writing. Tuition

All classes begin the week of October 19 and meet once a week for 28 weeks.

NEW Aleph

For students who have no previous knowledge of the Hebrew language to very little knowledge.

This class will allow students to build their foundation to the Hebrew language: Grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing ability, including basic speaking.

Book: אלופים באלף בית, דליה רוט ומאירה רום  |  Reading with vowels and writing in script, will develop your ability to read without vowels. Learning basic verbs in present tense; infinitive. Prepositions: in, to, from, of, with, without, on, about. Noun and adjective agreement: masculine/feminine, singular, plural. Question words: where, from, where, who, what, when, why. Pronouns. Syntax: have, do not have.

Please ask yourself:

  1. Am I able to read without vowels? Yes/no
  2. Do I know the Hebrew pronouns and how to use them when I speak? אני, אתה, הם, אנחנו,הוא,היא, הן, אתם, אתן Yes/no
  3. How is my Hebrew vocabulary? Do I know over 30 words? More? Or less?
  4. Do I know more than 5 basic verbs? Yes/no
  5. Am I familiar with the present tense form of the verbs: masculine singular, feminine singular, plural masculine, feminine plural? For example: גר, גרה, גרים, גרות   Yes/no
    b. Are you familiar with the infinitive form of verbs? Yes/no
  6. How many Hebrew verbs I assume I know?
  7. Am I able to communicate in Hebrew with some basic sentences? Yes/no
  8. Do I know the different between be/ba- le/la- for example:
    אֲנִי בַּיָּם  |  אֲנַחְנוּ בְּתֵל אָבִיב  |  אַתָּה הוֹלֵךְ לַיָּם

For Students who have previous knowledge of the Hebrew language, they are able to read and write and have a basic/minimum speaking skills.

Book: בראש ובראשונה גוני טישלר ועטרת ירדן-ברק. The verb: stems; present tense and infinitive, with a connection to past tense. Prepositions: conjugating “of” and “to”, של, לי, את
Adjectives: Plural masculine/feminine ending, including irregular forms. Syntax: constructs, possessive sentences, need, can. Nominal sentences in past tense (e.g. he was in the library, they were friends) Numbers: Feminine/ masculine form 1-20. Topics: nature, colors, family, food, communication, and subjects that related to our everyday experience.

For students who are able to communicate in simple sentences. The course will allow students to further express themselves and help them develop their vocabulary including speaking and reading skills.

Book: בראש ובראשונה גוני טישלר ועטרת ירדן-ברק The verb: Present tense, past and future tense. Prepositions: conjugating על, אצל, בשביל. Comparative words, Construct phrase.
Numbers: Feminine/ masculine form 1-100. Topics: time, daily activities, body, money, animals, wedding, party, travel.

Students in this class have learnt Hebrew for two years, but their knowledge goes beyond the two years. Students will be learning to actually use the language for everyday function.

Our Teachers

Keren Ashram

Keren has earned a B.Sc., in Marine Science & Ocean Environment from “Ruppin” Academic Center- Israel. She also holds teacher certification. In her professional work, she had a variety of experiences ranging from teaching, activities director and tour guide. She served in the IDF in the Engineering Corps and published her first children’s book “Seasons and Colors” in 2012. This is Keren’s 3rd year teaching in Federation’s Ulpan.

Zahava Gall

Zahava has 40 years’ experience as a teacher and principal at area day and Hebrew schools. This is Zahava’s 6th year teaching in Federation’s Ulpan.

Sarah Radovici

Sarah graduated from Bar Ilan University in Israel, has an MA in School Counseling and is a certified Jewish Education teacher. She teaches Hebrew at a Jewish day school and in her spare time sings in an Israeli choir. This is Sarah’s 2nd year teaching in Federation’s Ulpan.

Class Locations

All classes will be held online.

  • All classes begin the week of October 19 and meet for 28 weeks.
  • Classes meet for 90 minutes, once a week.
  • Tuition is refundable until November 2.
  • Tuition does not include the textbook.
  • Classes will only be offered where there is a minimum of six students per class.
