JCCNNJ presents “Bar Mitzvah Boy: Dramatic Play Reading and Audience Q&A with the Playwright”
October 24: 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm$40
Join the JCCNNJ as we watch the story of “Bar Mitzvah Boy” unfold before us. Joey – a poker-playing divorce attorney – needs a Bar Mitzvah, and he needs it now (he’s free tonight). But Rabbi Michael Levitz-Sharon — a woman leading a small synagogue and facing her daughter’s cancer diagnosis — doesn’t play that way. Can their friendship and their faith survive tragedy?
With humor and pathos abound, this play is a real crowd pleaser. “Bar Mitzvah Boy” was the 2017 Winner of the Jewish Playwriting Prize awarded by the Jewish Plays Project.
The Jewish Plays Project, based at the 14th Street Y in NYC, is part of a revolution that is underway in Jewish culture, creating amazing new pathways to Jewish identity and putting bold, progressive Jewish conversations on the world stage.
As a special touch to our JCCNNJ program, local award-winning actor/director Geoffrey Cantor will offer our audience a special greeting.
Our evening together begins with a welcome reception at 6:30 PM. Our theatre program kicks off at 7 PM with a staged play reading, followed by audience Q&A with the playwright, Mark Leiren-Young, winner of the 2017 Writer’s Guild of Canada Award for Best Documentary and three-time finalist for Writers Guild of Canada Awards.
Advanced registration is highly recommended. Similar programs have SOLD OUT in the past.
