BEYOND BORDERS: UNDERSTANDING THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT – PART II
Rabbi Shammai Engelmayer
Wednesday mornings, 10:00-11:30 am
Class schedule: March 6, 13, April 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8, 22, 29, June 5

Examine the sources behind current Middle East headlines through Melton-style text exploration and discussions. This course provides students with a strong, text-based historical overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict from the late 19th century through today. Course material is designed to encourage discussion and debate, and to challenge students to appreciate the basis of the conflicting historical claims made by all sides. The complexity of the conflict forces students to grapple with issues of religion,  history,  identity and survival—all reflected through primary sources, including newspaper articles, poetry, songs, government documents, speeches, photographs, and memoirs.   New students welcome; the first session will include a summary of the first semester.  Note:
There is an additional book fee for Beyond Borders.

A TALMUD GPS
Rabbi Shammai Engelmayer
Thursday mornings, 10-11:30 am –
Class schedule: March 7, 14, April 11, 18, 25, May 9, 23, 30, June 6, 13

Talmud study can be accessible and its discussions relevant to modern-day dilemmas. Gain an understanding of how the Talmud developed in this introductory course.  Acquire a Talmud GPS and explore the “map” of a typical page in Talmud. Class discussions will also explore some of the dilemmas examined in the Talmud that reflect rabbinic analysis and discourse – and what it all means to us today.  See how legal disputes outlined in the Talmud apply to 2013 cases.

OUT OF THE WHIRLWIND: WHERE WAS GOD DURING SUPERSTORM SANDY?
Rabbi Lawrence Troster
Monday evenings, 7:45-9:15 pm –
Class starts March 11, 18, April 8, 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20, June 3, 17
When confronted by Hurricane Sandy and other recent catastrophes, both natural and human- caused (like the Newtown killings), people often ask: “Where was God? Was God involved or not?”  These questions bring up the role of God in the world, whether natural events are “evil” and whether people have free will. This course will examine these questions from classical and modern Jewish sources. Participants will be encouraged to raise their own questions and suggest their own responses. No knowledge of Hebrew or of Jewish sources necessary.
